Christian Schuhböck

Christian Schuhböck (born March 17, 1962 in Vienna ) is an Austrian landscape ecologist . He is a sworn and court-certified expert specializing in world heritage and national parks as well as Secretary General of the nature, culture and landscape protection organization "Alliance For Nature" (AFN).

Live and act

Christian Schuhböck studied landscape ecology at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna , which he obtained with the academic degree Dipl.-Ing. completed. During this training, he founded the nature, culture and landscape protection organization “Alliance For Nature” in 1988, which he has been General Secretary ever since. Critics see the Alliance For Nature as a one-person company and accuse the association, which leads numerous lawsuits against the Semmering Base Tunnel, of being financed by the car lobby.

In 1988 he was awarded the Austrian State Prize for Environmental Protection (" Konrad Lorenz Prize for Environmental Protection") from the Federal Ministry for the Environment for "special services to preserve the irretrievable, in particular to prevent irreversible damage to the biosphere in Austria" ("Save the Village Valley" initiative) excellent. He is also the recipient of the “Conservation Awards” from the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Youth and Family in 1992 for the AFN initiative “Semmering Railway instead of tunnel madness”.

In the period 1993–1998 Schuhböck organized the initiative “World Heritage Semmering Railway ” and in 1998 was able to lead this unique high mountain railway and the surrounding cultural landscape into the UNESCO World Heritage list.

In 1995 he received a nomination from the AFN “Initiatives for the World Heritage” for the UNESCO “Sultan Qaboos Prize for Environmental Preservation 1995” by the Republic of Austria. In 1998/1999 there was an entry in the “ Guinness Book of Records ” with the UNESCO World Heritage emblem as part of the celebration of the “World Heritage Semmering Railway”. In 1999 he received an award from the Mayor of Toruń (Poland) for the presentation of the AFN touring exhibition The World Heritage at the international exhibition Tour-Expo '99 .

From 1999 Schuhböck was involved in the designation of the Swiss high mountain landscape around the Jungfrau , Mönch and Eiger including the Aletsch Glacier . In 2001, the area is "Jungfrau-Aletsch-Bietschhorn" by the UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. After that, Schuhböck campaigned for its expansion to include Blüemlisalp , Wetterhorn and Aare Glacier to an extent of another 285 km², which took place in 2007.

From 1993 to 2000 Schuhböck organized the “ Wachau World Heritage ” initiative . In 2000, this Lower Austrian river and cultural landscape on the Danube was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

In 2002 this was followed by awards with the “Prize of the Mayor of Toruń” (Poland) for the most attractive exhibition stand (World Heritage Site of Salzburg, Hohe Tauern National Park , Grossglockner High Alpine Road and Austria's World Heritage Sites) at the international exhibition “Tour-Expo 2002”, with the “ Grand Prix "of the international world heritage fair" Tour-Expo 2002 "in Toruń (Poland) for the complex and interesting AFN presentation of all world heritage sites in Austria, as well as the performance" Rock me Amadeus ". He also received the “Europa Nostra Medal of Honor” in 2002 for his contribution to the protection and enhancement of the natural and cultural heritage of Europe. In addition, the “Management Committee of Europa Nostra” justified its decision with the fact that Christian Schuhböck was one of those personalities whose work for the heritage of Europe is recognized by “ Europa Nostra ”. In 2002 Christian Schuhböck was added to the list “The Best in Heritage”, created by ICOM, UNESCO, Europa Nostra, with the support of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia.

In May 2003, Schuhböck started the AFN initiative "World Heritage Mount Everest " with the aim of expanding the existing Sagarmatha National Park in Nepal to include a cross-border World Heritage Site Sagarmatha - Chomolungma (Nepal, Tibet). To support this initiative, Schuhböck formulated its own declaration. The first to sign the declaration were numerous Everest climbers such as Wolfgang Nairz , Peter Habeler , Reinhold Messner , Sigi Hupfauer and Tashi Tenzing (grandson of Tenzing Norgay ).

In 2004 Schuhböck received an award from the Polish-Austrian Society for special services to the relations between Austria and Poland. In 2007 he received a nomination for the “Neptun Water Prize 2007” for the “Grüner See / Hochschwab - Nature Conservation for Water Protection” initiative. In 2008 this was followed by an award from the “Association of Friends of Grinzings” for their commitment to preserving the Grinzing vineyard cultural landscape. In 2009 he received the Great Decoration of Honor for Services to the Republic of Austria (1952) .

In 2019 he was awarded the professional title of professor and the Gold Medal of Honor of the State of Styria .

Act as an expert

Due to his commitment to the protection of natural and cultural landscapes, Schuhböck is also often active in the service of citizens' groups, writing expertise and reports. In 2012, he was able to prove that the Art Nouveau ensemble of the Otto Wagner Hospital in Vienna-Penzing meets the criteria of UNESCO World Heritage. The same applies to the cultural landscape of the Grinzing vineyards, whose World Heritage status he determined back in 2004. Schuhböck's specialist articles are published in daily newspapers, journals and magazines. The thematic focus of his publications are nature conservation, national parks and world heritage, for which he also writes books.
