Peter Abeles

Sir Peter Emil Herbert Abeles , AC (born April 25, 1924 in Vienna ; died June 25, 1999 in Sydney ) was an Austrian - Australian entrepreneur .

Life

Abeles grew up in a Hungarian - Jewish family and emigrated to Australia in 1949, where shortly afterwards he became Alltrans Pty Ltd. , co-founded a small transport company with initially two trucks . Alltrans merged with or took over several other companies; the resulting multinational TNT Ltd. carried out transport orders in more than 180 countries in 1999.

Abeles was beaten Knight Bachelor in 1972, appointed to the board of the Australian Reserve Bank in 1984 , named Australian of the Year by The Australian magazine in 1987 , and was inducted into the Order of Australia as a Companion in 1991.
