Tylopelta is a genus of humpback hoppers in the subfamily Membracinae . The genus is common in North and South America and three species are known.

The cicadas have a compact physique, they are usually brown, sometimes black or spotty, the surface is covered with wrinkles and short hairs. The pronotum protrudes over the tip of the abdomen, has a round elevation in front and behind it two more, which are gradually lower than the foremost. There are two dorsolateral ridges (carinae) on each side. The forewings are blackish brown with light spots. The tibiae of the fore and middle legs are flattened.

Typopelta is closely related to the genus Erechtia .

  • T. gibbera (Stål, 1869) is the best known species of the genus, it is also described under the name T. americana (Goding, 1893). This species is widespread in the United States (Arizona, Texas, Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia), and also occurs in Mexico, Panama, Honduras, Costa Rica, Brazil and Guatemala. Body length: 2.8 to 3.2 mm.
  • T. monstrosa (Fairmaire, 1846) is known from Brazil and Colombia. approx. 3 mm.
  • T. obscura Strümpel, 1974 is described from El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua. Body length approx. 3 mm.

Biology: The chirps suck phloem on plants of the family Clusiaceae , Fabaceae , Malpighiaceae , Melastomaceae , Asteraceae and Monimiaceae . The females lay their eggs in plant stems and then put a white foamy excrement over them, which probably serves as protection. A clutch consists of about 46 eggs. The nymphs are visited by ants who collect the honeydew.

Animals of the genus Tylopelta are considered pests in pigeon peas .
