Peter Lukas Bühlmann (born April 12, 1965 in Zurich ) is a Swiss mathematician (mathematical statistics ) and a professor at the ETH Zurich .

Life

Bühlmann studied mathematics at the ETH Zurich from 1985 with a diploma in 1990 and a doctorate with Hans Rudolf Künsch (and Erwin Bolthausen ) in 1993 ( The Blockwise Bootstrap in Time Series and Empirical Processes ). As a post-graduate student , he was at the University of California, Berkeley , where he became a Neyman Assistant Professor in 1995. In 1997 he became a lecturer at ETH Zurich with a full professorship from 2004. From 2013 he headed the Department of Mathematics.

He deals with statistics, machine learning and computational biology (including gene and protein analysis).

For 2018 he is invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Rio de Janeiro . In 2016 he became a Fellow of the American Statistical Association and in 2006 of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics . He is an honorary doctorate from the Catholic University of Leuven . In 2014/15 he was a Highly Cited Researcher at Thomson Reuters . From 2010 to 2012 he was co-editor of the Annals of Statistics. For 2020/21 he is the plenary speaker at the 8th European Congress of Mathematicians .

He is married and has four kids. Bühlmann is a passionate mountaineer.
