Sara Anna van de Geer (born May 7, 1958 in Leiden ) is a Dutch mathematician who specializes in mathematical statistics . She is a university professor at the ETH Zurich .

life and career

She is the daughter of the psychologist John P. van de Geer (1926–2008) and studied mathematics at the University of Leiden with a master’s degree in 1982. She then spent two years at the University of Tilburg and four years at the Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica in Amsterdam . In 1987 she did her doctorate with Willem van Zwet in Leiden (Regression Analysis and Empirical Processes). 1987/88 she was at the University of Bristol , 1989/90 lecturer at the University of Utrecht and taught from 1990 to 2005 (interrupted by a professorship at the Paul Sabatier University in Toulouse from 1997 to 1999) at the University of Leiden (with full professorship from 1999).

From 2005 she has been a professor at the ETH Zurich.

She deals with mathematical statistics, especially high-dimensional problems. In statistics, she dealt with empirical processes, curve estimation, machine learning, model selection, non-parametric and semi-parametric statistics.

From 2015 to 2017 she was President of the Bernoulli Society for Mathematical Statistics and Probability . She is a Fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics , a member of the International Statistical Institute , the Leopoldina and a corresponding member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences and she is on the Swiss Research Council. In 2010 she was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Hyderabad (India) ( regularization in high dimensional statistical models).

She is co-editor of Probability Theory and Related Fields, Scandinavian Journal of Statistics, Journal of Machine Learning Research, Statistical Surveys and Journal of Statistical Planning and Inference.
