Life

After passing his apprenticeship examination in 1937 as a carpenter, lettering and decorative painter, Brandstätter gave up his learned craft in the autumn of the same year and decided to work as a freelance painter. However, this was put to an end after a short time by being drafted into the Wehrmacht .

After the Second World War and the ensuing imprisonment, he returned to his homeland in May 1947. In November he married Hertha (1926–2010), née Frühauf, who always supported him in his career so that he could devote himself to his painting vocation. They had three children.

In addition to watercolors or oil paintings and charcoal drawings, Brandstätter also made mosaics and frescoes. His painting objects ranged from portraits and landscapes to Christian and contemporary subjects.

In addition to the professional title of Professor, Brandstätter was awarded the Golden Decoration of Honor of the State of Carinthia and had been an honorary citizen of the municipality of Spittal an der Drau since May 17, 2014.
