Peter Bronkhorst

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Peter Bronkhorst (born January 15, 1946 in Amsterdam ; † November 2, 2007 ibid) was a Dutch activist and, by his own account, was involved in the beginning of the Provo movement . He dropped a smoke bomb at the royal wedding in 1966 and later advocated recreational drug use.

Live and act

Bronkhorst was a trained typesetter and in the 1960s a member of the Pacifist Socialist Jongerenwerkgroep (PSJW) in Amsterdam . Together with Roel van Duijn , Luud Schimmelpennink , Rob Stolk and Robert Jasper Grootveld , he was one of the first members of the Provo movement in the Netherlands in 1965 .

According to Peter Bronkhorst, he was there when Roel van Duijn and Rob Stolk founded the Provo movement in a small room in the Jordaan district of Amsterdam . The Provo movement and the Provo magazine were founded in the same period: May 1965. Various statements and opinions have been passed on about the specific point in time: In the Provo chronology from the University of Amsterdam it says that Roel van Duijn, Martin Lindt and Rob Stolk announced the Provo movement. Elsewhere it is written that among others Luud Schimmelpennink, Rob Stolk, Roel van Duijn and Robert Jasper Grootveld established the movement. Bronkhorst was often to be found at the happenings organized by Robert Jasper Grootveld . The smoke bomb that set off during the wedding of Princess Beatrix and Claus von Amsberg on March 10, 1966, had been made and thrown by Bronkhorst. "Provoleider Peter Bronkhorst, the samen met Hans Tuynman de Meeste bommen heeft vervaardigd, GOOIT the dag de grootste rookbom, ...." . ( "Provoanführer Peter Bronkhorst, who made together with Hans Tuynman most bombs, threw on this day largest smoke bomb ....). “This action made the headlines of the international media.

As a " street boy ", as Bronkhorst called himself, he was not interested in a career in politics; in contrast to Roel van Duijn. Peter Bronkhorst's father, Huib (ert) Bronkhorst, was nicknamed "Peetvader van de Provo's" (Godfather of Provos) because he had helped his son and other Provos in a number of situations.

After the Provo movement disbanded in 1967, Peter Bronkhorst came into contact with drugs . During this time he met a woman and moved in with her and her two children. Both later had a third child; Bronkhorst started his own business as a window cleaner. In October 2007 Bronkhorst spoke at a demonstration under the motto: “ Red de Paddo ” (“Save the Paddo”). Paddo is the Dutch abbreviation for " Paddestoel " (mushroom), which means hallucinogenic mushrooms in Dutch .

In 2007, doctors diagnosed cancer . A month later, Bronkhorst died in the hospital with his wife and children.
