Peter Busaeus

Peter Busäus , occasionally also Peter Buys (* 1540 in Nijmegen , Duchy of Geldern , † April 12, 1587 in Vienna ) was a Dutch Jesuit and professor of theology.

At the age of 21, Busäus joined the Society of Jesus in Cologne in 1561 . Busäus studied classical philology and theology and graduated with a doctorate . His work "Auctoritates sacrae" was created in Cologne between 1569 and 1570 and was reprinted in 1835 as "Opus catechisticum".

After his habilitation , the order entrusted him with a teaching position at the University of Vienna . There he was appointed rector of the Jesuit college in 1586 and made a member of the Ratio Studiorum commission .

As a religious provincial he was open to scientific research and also supported the research of the German astronomer Christoph Scheiner and his student, the Swiss mathematician Johann Baptist Cysat . At the same time, he had to brake the two to protect them from the official church.

His brothers were the Jesuit Johannes (1547–1611) and Thomas Busaeus (1548–1585).
