Peter Dronke

Ernst Peter Michael Dronke (born May 30, 1934 in Cologne ; † April 19, 2020 ) was a British Middle Latin philologist of German origin.

In 1939, while still a child, Dronke emigrated to New Zealand with his family and studied there at the University of Wellington . After the bachelor's and master's degrees, he went on a scholarship to Magdalen College , one of the older colleges of Oxford University , in 1955 . In 1961 he became a lecturer ( " Lecturer ") for Medieval Latin Philology at the University of Cambridge , from 1989 as a full professor and professor in the same subject. In 2001 he retired . Dronke was internationally recognized as one of the most renowned representatives of Middle Latin philology. In 1984 he was accepted into the British Academy . In 2001 an international commemorative publication was published entitled Poetry and Philosophy in the Middle Ages .

Peter Dronke was married to the linguist and literary scholar Ursula Dronke (1920–2012), some of whose publications he also contributed to. He died in April 2020 at the age of 85 after kidney failure .
