Peter E. Erichson

Peter E. Erichson (born January 4, 1881 in Schwedt / Oder ; † February 14, 1963 in Rostock ; actually: Peter Emil Erichsohn ) was a German publisher and head of Hinstorff Verlag .

Life and accomplishments

The printer and typesetter Erichson, who came from a poor background, acquired the Rostock printing company in 1907 from the heirs of Dethloff Carl Hinstorff and in 1925 the Ludwigsluster publishing house shares. He led the Hinstorff Verlag to a high reputation again by publishing good fiction , local literature, translations of Scandinavian literature and scientific publications from the universities of Rostock, Greifswald and Hamburg.

As a constant patron of the fine arts , Erichson made the entire lower floor of his Rostock villa, Moltkestrasse 19, available for exhibitions of the newly founded Rostock Artists' Association in 1919 .

In his publishing house, he published the “ Mecklenburgische Monatshefte ” founded by Johannes Gillhoff in 1925 and published Richard Wossidlo's folklore collections .

In 1942 the publishing house and printing company fell victim to the bombing raid on Rostock.

After 1945, Erichson rebuilt the publishing house with great drive. In 1956 the University of Rostock awarded him the title of Honorary Senator . The Rostock District Council honored him with the 1957 John Brinckman Prize . In 1961, on the occasion of his 80th birthday, he received the Patriotic Order of Merit in silver.

In 1959, at the age of 78, he left the publishing house and transferred it to public ownership . As a fatherly and expert advisor, he remained connected to the publisher and its authors until his death. Peter E. Erichson was buried in the Schifferfriedhof in Ahrenshoop .
