John Brinckman Prize

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The John Brinckman Prize was originally an honorary award donated by the Rostock Heimatvereine working group . It was awarded to people who had rendered outstanding services to the Low German nationality and the Low German language. The award is named after the Low German narrator John Brinckman (1814–1870).

history

The John Brinckman Prize was a prize donated from 1923 on the initiative of the Low German writer Wilhelm Schmidt by the Arbeitsgemeinschaft der Rostock Heimatvereine, which was awarded as part of the Low German People's Day. It was intended as an honorary award for poets, writers, scientists and artists who had promoted the Low German nationality and the Low German language through their work. The award ceremony was held in the large city school , a Rostock high school.

From 1936 the press and propaganda office of the Rostock city administration took over the award, now during the Rostock Culture Week. So it was possible for the city to highlight the connection between local history associations and National Socialism. From this year, the award was given by the mayor Walter Volgmann in the auditorium of the state university . From this time onwards, the selection of the award winners was considerably limited, as two additional National Socialist cultural officials were now represented on the committee. Some of the following award winners were in the favor of Gauleiter Friedrich Hildebrandt . The prize was awarded by the seaside city of Rostock until 1944. The price was initially 500 to 1000 Reichsmarks and z. B. endowed with 2000 Reichsmarks in 1937.

New foundation in the GDR

In 1956 the award was re-established in the GDR . It has now been awarded by the Rostock District Council , again as a prize for progressive Low German cultural work.
