life and work

Career

Peter Edward Lionel Wheeler took his mother's name at the age of 16 and called himself Russell. He studied at Oxford University with William J. Entwistle and was there from 1937 College Lecturer. During the war he was an intelligence officer. From 1946 to 1953 he was Lecturer in Spanish Studies at Oxford University, from 1953 until his retirement in 1981 (as successor to his teacher) King Alfonso XIII Professor of Spanish Studies .

Russell as a revolutionary medievalist

With his essay "Some Problems of Diplomatic in the" Cantar de Mio Cid "and Their Implications" (in: Modern Language Review 47, 1952, pp. 340-349), Russell initiated a rethink about the time and place of the origin of the Cantar de Mio Cid , which replaced the previously valid view of Ramón Menéndez Pidal . Fifty years later, a celebratory colloquium was dedicated to this pioneering act in the presence of the author.

Russell as a literary figure

The Spanish author Javier Marías , who had taught in Oxford from 1983 to 1985, immortalized Russell under the name Sir Peter Wheeler in his novels Todas las almas , 1989 (German: Alle Seelen oder die Irren von Oxford , 1991) and Negra espalda del tiempo , 1998 (German: Black Back of Time , 2000), also in the trilogy Tu rostro mañana , 2002–2007 (German: Your face tomorrow , 2004–2009 with the volumes: Fieber und Lanze; Tanz und Traum; Poison und Schatten and Farewell ), most recently in the novel Berta Isla , 2017.

Honors

Russell was an honorary doctorate from Oxford University (he never completed his regular dissertation). He became a member of the British Academy in 1977 and knighted in 1995. He was Commander in the Order de Isabel la Católica and in the Order of the Infante Dom Henrique . Four festschrifts were dedicated to him.
