Peter Andreas Egge (born April 1, 1869 in Trondheim , † July 15, 1959 in Oslo ) was a Norwegian writer and journalist .

Life

Egge's father Olaus Egge was a carter, his mother Oline Wibe came from an impoverished farming family. Peter was the second oldest of nine children in the poor family. Peter attended the Trondheim Cathedral School, but had to drop out of school for financial reasons. He then worked as an office worker, seaman and journalist. Together with Arne Dybfest , he edited the magazine Den nye tid . In 1897 he married Anna Marie Svensen and moved to Kristiania . One of his sons was the politician Ørnulf Egge .

Between 1913 and 1916 and 1935 Egge was chairman of the Norwegian Writers' Association . In 1935 he was awarded the Gyldendals legat literary prize.

Egge published his first stories in 1887. At that time he was still going to school. His first novel Almue was published in 1891 . However, it was not known to a larger audience until the late 1890s. Egge is considered a very prolific writer and published numerous other books. While in his early books he mostly describes the life of the common people in Trondheim, he later turns to ethical and psychological topics. This phase was initiated by the novel Hjærtet published in 1907 , which also became known abroad. In a third phase, from 1920, Egge concentrated on the contrasts between the traditional way of life of the rural population of Trøndelag and the developments of modern times.

From 1948 to 1955 he published his memoir under the title Minner .
