Life

Peter Erasmus Gspan, who has been with Gspan since 1850, was born the son of a farmer. In the course of the Napoleonic wars he experienced the cession of Tyrol to Bavaria and in 1809 he joined the Tyrolean uprising against Napoleon and his Rhine Confederation Bavaria and fought in the Zirler peasant company for Andreas Hofer against the Bavarian-French foreign rule. Then he studied law. He died in Graz on January 9, 1864, after he had been raised to the hereditary Austrian nobility in 1850.

Professional and political career

Peter Erasmus Gspan began his civil service career in Styria when he joined the Styrian land rights in 1817 after completing his legal studies. In 1845 he returned to his native Tyrol. He was a favorite of Archduke Johann , who promoted him, so that he quickly made a career, albeit in the agricultural administration. On December 15, 1847, he was appointed to the Central Committee of the Imperial and Royal Agricultural Society and was elected President on the same day. In 1852 he was reappointed to the presidency after his term of office had expired.

In the meantime he had become politically active in the course of the revolution of 1848. He was elected to the Frankfurt National Assembly for the constituency of Unterinntal / Tyrol and Vorarlberg , to which he belonged from September 1, 1848 until the Austrian MPs left on April 13, 1949. Back in Tyrol, he dealt again with issues of agriculture in Tyrol, in particular through publications on agricultural law issues, for which he was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Prague . After retiring, he moved to Graz in 1859, where he spent the rest of his life.
