Peter Füssli (also Füessli ) (* 1482 in Zurich ; †  1548 in Zurich) was a bell and piece caster and from 1512 to 1521 mercenary on Italian trains, from 1518 member of the Grand Council of Zurich, 1519–1528 in various council commissions.

Life

Peter Füssli was the son of the bell founder Peter Füssli and brother of Hans Füssli (* 1477; † 1538, possibly 1548).

His first marriage was to Verena Holzhalb, daughter of the butcher Jakob Holzhalb, and his second marriage to Margareta Wirz, daughter of the Johanniterschaffner Johannes Wirz. He was a bell and cannon founder and fought as a mercenary captain in the Milan Wars (1513 Novara , 1515 Marignano ). In contrast to his brother Hans, who worked as a chronicler and was a committed supporter of the Zurich reformer Ulrich Zwingli , Peter Füssli stuck to the old faith. Nevertheless, in the second Kappel War in 1531, as an artillery captain, he commanded the guns of the vanguard and participated in the peace negotiations. Peter Füssli left a description of his journey to Jerusalem in 1523 (he traveled on the same pilgrim ship as Ignatius von Loyola ), a letter about the fall of Rhodes in 1522 and a depiction of the Kappel War, which cleared him of the suspicion that he had not fulfilled his duty in battle . In keeping with family tradition, the pilgrimage distinguished Peter Füssli as a particularly pious and honorable citizen of Zurich. His souvenirs from the holy land, including a rose from Jericho and Agnus Dei wax tiles, were documented in an inventory by a descendant of the same name in the 17th century.
