geography

course

The Kemmete course from the Vogelsberg on the way to Fulda (end of the map on the right)

The Kemmete or the Kreidenbach rises in the Hohen Vogelsberg . The source is on the northern edge of the Freiensteinau district of Reichlos - immediately east of the high road there - at about 495  m above sea level. Above sea level.

The stream flowing eastwards initially runs through agricultural areas to the east, whereby it already flows through the approximately 1 hectare large dammed brick pond about 400 m east-northeast of the source  . After a further 3 km of flow, the stream reaches the village of Hauswurz , a district of Neuhof , where state roads  3141 (north-south) and 3181 (east-west) meet. There, between Taufsteinstrasse and Rosenweg, the Hängsberger water flowing from Weidenau in the southwest and the Mengmes water flowing from the northwest meet.

About 900 m further east, the Kemmete takes on the Kauppener Graben (also known as Kaupenergraben) coming from the south and passing through the Neuhofer district of Kauppen to the west. Then the stream passes the Knöschen ( Gefels ; 508.7  m ) to the south . Its stretch of water there is part of the fauna-flora-habitat area tributaries of the lilac (FFH No. 5523-302; 95.87  ha ). The stream runs through the Kemmetetal to the Neuhofer district of Rommerz , the larger of two localities of which it passes in the south , initially about 2.5 km in a general eastward direction, then about 5 km in an east- south- east direction . The L 3181 accompanies the stream from Houseleek to Rommerz on its north side. About 1 km south-east of Rommerz, the Kemmete begins a long left curve to the north-east in the direction of Neuhof's core town, in which it takes up the Lützbach flowing from the north-west.

About 300 m north-east of the Lützbach tributary and about 250 m north-north-west of the Neuhof train station , the Kemmete flows into the Fliede tributary of the Fulda, coming from the south, immediately before a bridge on Bundesstraße 40 ; its mouth is 270  m above sea level at Fliede-kilometer 9.4.

Natural allocation

The Kemmete flows in the natural spatial main unit group through the East Hessian Uplands (No. 35). Its source lies within the main unit Hoher Vogelsberg (351) in the subunit Eastern High Vogelsberg (351.1). A little below Reichlos the brook changes over to the subunit Eastern Lower Vogelsberg (350.3) and in Houseleek to the subunit Gieseler Forst (350.6), both of which belong to the main unit Unterer Vogelsberg (350). At Rommerz it flows into the natural area Fliedener Becken (352.00), which belongs to the subunit Fliedetal (352.0) within the main unit Fuldaer Senke (352) . The mouth of the Kemmete lies roughly on the border of the Fliedener Basin with the natural area of Kerzeller Fliedetal (352.01).

Catchment area and tributaries

The catchment area of the Kemmete is 55.19 km². Their tributaries include, viewed downstream (according to the individual evidence mentioned in the table header):

Saline sewage

The water of the Kemmete, which mostly comes from the Vogelsberg, is only very slightly polluted. The saline wastewater from the Neuhof-Ellers plant of K + S -AG is only discharged through the inflow of the Lützbach in the center of Neuhof .

Watermills

There used to be numerous mills on the Kemmete ; Looking downriver: Bastenmühle, Schlagmühle, Obere and Untere Kemmetemühle, all below houseleek, as well as Schlagmühle (oil was cut here), Ochsenmühle, Mittelmühle, Engelsmühle and Bowelsmühle, all of which are located at or in Rommerz and are still preserved.

Streets

The state road  3181 runs above houseleek south and from there and through Rommerz to Neuhof north along the Kemmete. This road meets the L 3141 ( Brandlos - Hauswurz - Buchenrod ) in Hauswurz , which then form a short common section in the village as part of Taufsteinstraße .
