The village was first mentioned in a document between 1090 and 1150. The place was owned by the St. Peter monastery in Petersberg . In 1351 Johann von Eisenbach bought the village from Ludwig von Romrod and, after the lords of Eisenbach had died out in the male line in 1428, it became part of the Riedesel court of Freiensteinau through marriage and inheritance . In 1630 the district and Feldmark again belonged to the Petersberg provost. In 1684 the Riedesel ceded the village to the Fulda monastery and since then the village has belonged to the Hosenfeld court .

During the Second World War , it was largely destroyed on March 31, 1945 by artillery fire from American troops as they marched in.

As part of the regional reform in Hesse , houseleek was incorporated into Neuhof by state law with effect from August 1, 1972.

religion

The Catholic believers in Houseleek belong to the Catholic parish of St. Bartholomew Houseleek with the Parish Church of St. Bartholomew , which is part of the pastoral association Christ the Redeemer Flieden-Houseleek and is thus assigned to the diocese of Fulda .
