Peter Guy Wolynes (born April 21, 1953 in Chicago ) is an American chemist (theoretical chemistry, biochemistry), professor at Rice University .

Wolynes graduated from Indiana University with a bachelor's degree in chemistry in 1971 and received his PhD from Harvard University in 1976 . As a post-doctoral student , he was with John Deutch at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology . In 1976 he became an Assistant Professor at Harvard and in 1980 at the University of Illinois , where he became Professor of Chemistry, Physics and Biophysics at the Center for Advanced Study. In 1981 he received a research grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation ( Sloan Research Fellowship ). In 2000 he moved to the University of California, San Diego ( Francis Crick Professor ) and in 2011 to Rice University ( Bullard Welch Foundation Professor ) and there at the Center for Theoretical Biological Physics.

Theoretically, he deals with protein folding and algorithms for predicting the structure of proteins, dynamics of chemical processes in the liquid phase, theory of glasses and the glass transition and electronic structure of liquids and applications in biophysics ( gene regulation networks , stochastic cell biology, dynamics of the cytoskeleton ).

Memberships and honors

He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences , the Leopoldina , the Royal Society , the American Association for the Advancement of Science , the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (1991), the American Philosophical Society (2006), and he is a Fellow of the American Physical Society . He holds honorary doctorates from Indiana University and Stockholm University .
