Peter Gilles (born February 6, 1938 in Frankfurt am Main ) is a German legal scholar and professor emeritus at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main .

Career

Gilles studied law and economics at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University, Frankfurt am Main , from 1958 to 1962 . After the first state examination in law in 1962, the legal preparatory service followed in Frankfurt and further studies in Berlin, Saarbrücken and Paris, which in 1964 included a diploma from the Collège Européen des Sciences Sociales et Economiques in Paris.

From 1964 to 1966 Gilles was a research assistant at the law faculty of the University of Frankfurt, where he received his doctorate in 1965. After the second state examination in law in 1966 he was a research assistant there until 1970 , and from 1970 to 1971 he received a grant from the German Research Foundation (DFG). In 1971 he completed his habilitation in Frankfurt with Gerhard Schiedermair .

Act

From 1972 to 1975 Gilles was professor of civil law , civil procedural law , general procedural law and procedural theory in the legal department . At the same time he took over professorships at the Universities of Cologne and Freiburg , and from 1975 to 1979 he was Professor of Civil Law and Procedural Law in the Law Faculty of the University of Hanover . In 1979 he was appointed professor and co-director of the Institute for Comparative Law in the Faculty of Law at the University of Frankfurt. From 1991 to 1992 Gilles was dean of the law faculty at the University of Frankfurt, he retired in 2003.

From 1984 to 1985, Gilles was in charge of research assignments for the Federal Ministry of Justice on legal remedies reform and from 1988 to 1992 on judicial reform as part of the major project of a structural analysis of the administration of justice (SAR). In addition, from 1990 to 1999 he was a lecturer at the Hessian Administration and Business Academy (VWA), Frankfurt.

Since 1975, Gilles has held numerous visiting professorships, lectureships and lectureships in Western and Eastern Europe, North, Central and South America, but above all in North and Southeast Asia. In 2004 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Vilnius and in 2007 an honorary doctorate from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki .

Focus of work

Gilles' main focus in teaching and research in civil law is contract law, consumer law and competition law; in procedural law, in particular civil procedure law, judicial and legal professional law, comparative judicial and procedural law, as well as alternative conflict resolution. In his legal training, he focused on the connection between theory and practice and the integration of social sciences into law

Gilles was the editor of the German national reports on the World Conferences on Litigation Law in Ghent (Belgium) 1977, Würzburg 1983, Utrecht (Netherlands) 1987, Coimbra / Lisbon (Portugal) 1991, Taormina (Italy) 1995, Vienna (Austria) 1999, Mexico City (Mexico), Salvador / Bahia (Brazil) 2007.

From 1979 to 2003 he was the managing editor of the Forum Legal Science series . Contributions to recent developments in law (most recently Nomos Verlagsgesellschaft). He was co-founder and from 1992 to 1997 co-editor of the Zeitschrift für die Anwaltspraxis (ZAP). Since 1996 he has been in charge of the Eastern European States and East Asia section of the Zeitschrift für Zivilprocess International (ZZPInt). He has been a member of the editorial board of Taise / Law magazine at Vilnius University (Lithuania) since 1999
