Peter Gottfried Kremsner (born May 16, 1961 in Wiener Neustadt ) is an Austrian infectiologist and tropical medicine specialist .

Career

Kremsner grew up in Sigleß , Austria. He studied medicine at the University of Vienna and received his doctorate in medicine in 1985. He began his academic career as a doctor at the Institute for Specific Prophylaxis and Tropical Medicine at the University of Vienna.

In 1987 he went to Brazil to work for the Superintendencia de Campanhas de Saude Publica in Rio Branco.

From 1988 to 1996 he was group leader at the Institute for Tropical Medicine in Berlin . In 1990 he received his habilitation in tropical medicine and specific prophylaxis at the University of Vienna and in 1992 he completed his habilitation in tropical medicine and parasitology at the Humboldt University in Berlin .

In 1992 he took over the research direction at the Albert Schweitzer Hospital and founded the medical research center in Lambaréné , Gabon , now the Center de Recherches Médicales de Lambaréné (CERMEL), and made it one of the leading research and training centers in Africa.

In 1996 Kremsner was appointed professor for human parasitology at the University of Tübingen . Since 2008 he has been Professor of Tropical Medicine, Travel Medicine and Parasitology at the University of Tübingen and Medical Director of Department VII of the Medical Clinic and the Institute for Tropical Medicine. In 2014 he was appointed CEO of the Comprehensive Infectious Disease Center Tübingen (CIDiC) at the University Hospital Tübingen .

Kremsner is married to the lawyer Inge Thomforde. You have three children. He is a dual Austrian-Gabonese citizen.

research

Kremsner carried out numerous studies on infectious diseases and is the author of 600 scientific publications. Since the 1990s he has been the most cited scientist in the field of parasitology in Germany and malaria in Europe (EU27). He is considered a respected scientist and virus expert who classified and assessed the risk of infection and the course of disease during the Covid 19 pandemic .

Kremsner was the head of studies for key studies on the development of atovaquone / proguanil , artesunate / amodiaquine , artesunate / pyronaridine and parenteral artesunate for malaria therapy and prophylaxis. He and his team also developed a simplified method for assessing the severity of malaria. With this method, the course of the disease can be better predicted and the malaria therapy can be adjusted using the so-called “Lambaréné score”. The “Lambaréné Score” is based on the clinical parameters coma and heavy breathing and does not depend on laboratory tests. This score was developed from data from a study led by Kremsner on 26,000 children with severe malaria. He was also involved in the phase 3 trial of the malaria vaccine, RTS, S / AS01 as a member of the lead study committee and as coordinator of the clinical trials in Lambaréné. Since 2011 he has been working with his team on the development of other malaria vaccines, in particular PfSPZ-based vaccines in cooperation with the company Sanaria Inc. A study of a PfSPZ vaccine carried out by his team in Tübingen showed 100 percent protection, which the WHO guidelines for worldwide use of 75% even surpasses. Kremsner and his teams in Tübingen and Lambaréné also developed a controlled human malaria infection model. Using this model can significantly reduce the time it takes to develop malaria vaccines and drugs clinically.
