Peter Hanau

Peter Hanau (born July 13, 1935 in Berlin ) is a German lawyer and professor emeritus at the University of Cologne .

Career

Hanau studied from 1954 to 1958 law at the universities of Freiburg and Göttingen . After the first state examination in law, he became a research assistant with Wolfgang Siebert at the University of Heidelberg in 1958 . In 1960 Hanau began his legal clerkship , which he completed in 1964 with the second state examination in law.

As early as 1963 Hanau was at the University of Göttingen with a thesis supervised by Franz Gamillscheg on the subject of "Objective elements in the facts of the declaration of intent " as a Dr. iur. been awarded a doctorate. In 1968 he completed his habilitation with Franz Gamillscheg on the "causality of breach of duty" and accepted a position at the Free University of Berlin . In 1971 Hanau moved to the University of Cologne, where he held the chair for labor law and civil law until his retirement on July 31, 2000 and was director of the Research Institute for Social Law at the University of Cologne.

From 1983 to 1986 Hanau was an honorary judge at the Cologne Regional Labor Court , from 1986 to 1989 he was rector of the University of Cologne. From 1990 to 1999 Hanau was president of the German Labor Court Association and has been honorary president of the association ever since.

Hanau is co-editor of the Japanese Law series and a collection of Japanese specialist literature, making Cologne a research base for Japanese lawyers.

Honors

Hanau is an honorary doctorate in law from Uppsala University (1989) and Kyōto Ritsumeikan University (1990). In November 2009, the Japanese government decided to award him the Order of the Rising Sun with Star, Golden and Silver Rays . This honors Hanau's more than thirty years of commitment to the German-Japanese exchange of science.
