Peter Hewitt Hare

Peter Hewitt Hare (born March 12, 1935 in New York City ; † January 3, 2008 ibid) was an American philosopher whose fields of work included American pragmatism , in particular the works of Dewey , Mead and Peirce .

Life

Hare received his PhD in Philosophy from Columbia University . He taught from 1962 to 2001 at the State University of New York in Buffalo, 1971 as a full professor. His last position there was Distinguished Professor Emeritus for Philosophy until 2008. In Buffalo, Hare was also a member of the Center for Cognitive Science in 1990 and of the first international Summer Institute for Cognitive Science in 1994. In 1966 and 1968 he held scholarships for projects on GH Mead and CJ Ducasse.

Hare was Dean of the Faculty from 1971 to 1975 and 1985 to 1994. He was a co-editor of the Transactions of the Charles S. Peirce Society since 1974 and co-editor of the American Philosophical Quarterly (1978-87), the Journal of Speculative Philosophy (1985–2008) and the Frontiers of Philosophy Series at Prometheus Books (1986–2008). Hare was also a member of the Center for Process Studies and the Santayana Society and held several positions within the American Philosophical Association, Eastern Division, and was a chairman of numerous philosophical societies, including 2006, the William James Society and the Society for the Advancement of American Philosophy of 1988 to 1990. Through the latter, he was also honored in March 1996 with their highest honor, the Herbert W. Schneider Award , for “outstanding contributions to the understanding and development of American philosophy”. He also received awards from the National Endowment for the Humanities (1968 to 1969 as a young researcher, 1987 for a conference on historical philosophy, 1990 for a conference on the reception of American philosophical traditions in other countries).

Hare was married twice. His first wife, Daphne Joan Kean (* 1937), a doctor, died in 1995, his second wife is the poet and literary critic Susan Howe (* 1937). Hare leaves behind son Clare and daughter Gwendolyn Meigs.
