Peter Homphaeus III
Peter Homphaeus III (the younger) (* 1524 in Cochem ; † January 16, 1601 in Pfalzel ) was a German priest and dean of the Pfalzeler Stift .
life and career
Peter Homphaeus III was the nephew of Peter Homphaeus II (the elder, 1470–1537) and Peter Homphaeus I (around 1480–1556) and probably the older brother of Christoph Humphaeus (around 1525–1580). From 1536 he was able to attend a school in Emmerich thanks to financial support from his uncle . In 1543 he graduated and went first to Leuven and the following year on June 6, 1544 to Cologne to take his master's degree there in 1546 . In 1547 he finally returned to Emmerich where he was appointed canon of the Martinstift . However, when his uncle died, he moved back to the old homestead in order to be able to secure his prebend there . He initially worked again as a canon at the Pfalzeler Stift, then went to Cochem , where he worked as a pastor a. a. occupied with the defense of the Reformation attempts of Philip I von Winneburg-Beilstein. On March 7, 1566, the Pfalzeler Stift elects and appoints him as its dean. 6 years later, on February 13, 1566, he received an appointment as professor from the University of Trier, where he was awarded the title of Rector magnificus from 1573 to 1579 . It is also known that he dedicated himself to promoting young people. Some examples of this are the humanist Mathias Agritius, who was born in Wittlich around 1545 during his time in the Himmerod monastery , the later Trier auxiliary bishop Peter Binsfeld and his presumably younger brother Christoph (Homphen) who later became a professor at the law faculty in Trier. After his death he was highly respected, he left a hospital in Trier and the poor in Cochem 2000 thalers and also donated 6 scholarships for Trier and Emmerich high school students, relatives and for Cochemers.
