Peter Horsey Marris

Peter Horsey Marris (born July 6, 1927 in London , England , † June 25, 2007 in Guilford , Connecticut ) was a British-American sociologist , urban planner and author.

Life

Peter Marris studied sociology. From 1955 to 1972 he was a researcher at the Institute of Community Studies in the East End of London a. a. active with Peter Willmott and Peter Townsend ; the institute was founded in 1954 by Michael Young (later Lord Young of Dartington) and was one of the most important sociological institutions of post-war England. From 1972 to 1976 he was at the Center for Environmental Studies.

Peter H. Marris was Professor of Urban Design and Director of the Urban Design Studies Program at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) from 1976 to 1991 . As an emeritus from 1991 he worked at Yale University .

Marris became known for his works and scientific work on urban development, urban planning and urban renewal, especially on Africa. He was also known as the author of the novel "The Dreams of General Jerusalem".

He had been married to Professor Dolores Hayden since 1975 . The marriage produced a daughter. Marris died of complications from cancer.
