Peter Karlsson (born February 17, 1966 in Lundby , † March 11, 1995 in Västerås ) was a Swedish ice hockey player .

Life

Karlsson has been a defender for the Swedish ice hockey team VIK Västerås HK in HockeyAllsvenskan since 1984 . He became known nationwide by being the first male professional ice hockey player to come out as gay. After intermittent sporting stints with the Swedish ice hockey teams Surahammars IF and IK Westmannia-Köping , he returned to his home team VIK Västerås HK, where he played as a defender in the Elitserien . On March 11, 1995, at the age of 29, he was the victim of a homophobically motivated murder.
