Peter Kurer

Peter Kurer (born June 28, 1949 in Zurich ) is a Swiss manager and business lawyer . He was a member of the UBS Group Management from 2002 and from April 2008 to April 2009 as the successor to Marcel Ospel as Chairman of the UBS Board of Directors . From 2016 to 2020 he was Chairman of the Board of Directors of Sunrise Communications .

Life

Peter Kurer attended grammar school in the Jesuit college in Feldkirch (Vorarlberg) and at the Kapuzin college in Appenzell (Swiss Matura type A ). He then completed a law degree at the University of Zurich with a focus on constitutional and administrative law, which he completed with a doctorate. Peter Kurer is admitted to the Zurich bar . He also holds a Master of Law (LL.M.) from the University of Chicago . In addition to his studies, Peter Kurer worked as a journalist, including for the Neue Zürcher Zeitung (NZZ).

First he was the legal secretary at the Zurich District Court . From 1980 to 1990 he worked at Baker & McKenzie in Zurich, first as an associate, then as a partner. From 1991 to 2001 Peter Kurer was a leading partner at Homburger Rechtsanwälte in Zurich.

In 1996, Kurer led the merger of the two former Basel pharmaceutical and chemical companies Ciba-Geigy and Sandoz to form Novartis . At the then SAirGroup , he provided legal support for the complicated contracts in connection with investments in foreign airlines, such as Sabena or TAP Air Portugal .

In 2011, Kurer held several corporate and financial consulting mandates and gave lectures to business people and politicians around the world.

From April 2016 to April 2020 he was Chairman of the Board of Directors of Sunrise Communications . After the failed takeover of UPC Switzerland by Sunrise in 2019 due to resistance from shareholders, Kurer announced at the beginning of 2020 that he would no longer be available for re-election at the Annual General Meeting in April 2020. He was succeeded by Thomas D. Meyer . Sunrise CEO Olaf Swantee resigned with immediate effect.

Kurer is married, has three grown children and lives in Herrliberg .
