Peter Mathes
Peter Mathes (born February 5, 1940 in Essen ) is a German cardiologist , from 1979 to 2000 chief physician at the Höhenried Clinic for cardiovascular diseases on Lake Starnberg and since January 1, 2000, head physician in cardiology at the Munich Rehabilitation Center. He has significantly shaped the development of rehabilitation after a heart attack, especially through the integration of invasive diagnostics .
Career
Peter Mathes was born as the son of the internist Hubert Mathes and his wife Else in Essen. After graduating from high school in 1959 at the Helmholtz grammar school in Essen, he studied medicine at the universities of Freiburg , Bonn , Vienna and Munich , which was completed with the state examination and license to practice medicine in 1967. While still as a medical assistant, an internship at Muhlenberg Hospital, Plainfield, New Jersey, USA followed in 1967. From 1968 to 1969 Mathes was a Postdoctoral Fellow in Experimental Medicine at Detroit General Hospital, Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, USA, with RJ Bing. Here Mathes found the leading working group on the subject of experimental heart attacks. Studies on the energy metabolism of the heart muscle such as "Functional compartmentation of ATP in heart muscle" and on the catecholamine metabolism in heart attacks received great attention and led to the foundation of the "Journal of Molecular and Cellular Cardiology", from which the "International Society for Heart Research" developed.
Mathes has been with A. Christine, geb. Ohrem married. The couple have two children and three grandchildren.
Working life
From 1970 to 1972 Peter Mathes was a Postdoctoral Fellow in Medicine and Cardiology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota . Heart surgery pioneers such as John Webster Kirklin and Dwight McGoon were active there. Mathes obtained his US cardiologist qualification there . From 1973 to 1979 he worked at the I. Medical Clinic on the right of the Isar of the Technical University of Munich (H. Blömer) on the subject of the influence of myocardial infarction on the diastolic ventricular function and experimentally on the contractility of the surviving heart muscle after infarction . In 1974 he was recognized as a specialist in internal medicine and completed his habilitation in internal medicine at the Technical University of Munich. A year later, he was recognized as a specialist in cardiology. In the same year Mathes became head of the research program "Experimental Heart Attack" funded by the German Research Foundation at the I. Medical Clinic of the Technical University of Munich. In 1979 he was appointed head physician at the Höhenried Clinic for cardiovascular diseases of the Upper Bavaria State Insurance Institute. In 2000 he took over the management of cardiology at the rehabilitation center in Munich. In the 2000s Mathes volunteered as a German Rotary Volunteer Doctor (grvd.de) at the Dhulikhel Hospital in Dhulikhel near Kathmandu in Nepal at irregular intervals . In addition to the practical training of the doctors who work there, the focus of his work is on the prevention of acquired heart valve defects.
International work
In 1981 he was appointed professor for internal medicine / cardiology at the Technical University of Munich. In addition to the introduction of invasive diagnostics, Mathes endeavored to put the entire concept of rehabilitation after a heart attack on a new scientific basis, which integrates the entire process, including detailed knowledge of the anatomy and function of the heart, into the concept of holistic care included. These efforts were reflected in numerous international conferences, scientific symposia and over 250 publications.
In 1983, under his chairmanship, the rehabilitation working group of the German Society for Cardiovascular Research was founded, and in 1984 the rehabilitation working group of the European Society for Cardiology, now the European Association for Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation, was also founded under his leadership.
In 1985 he was appointed a member of the “Clinical Cardiology” Council of the American Heart Association, in 1986 a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the German Heart Foundation, in 1988 a Fellow of the European Society of Cardiology (FESC) and a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology (FACC).
Expert activity for the World Health Organization (WHO)
The worldwide importance of rehabilitation was reflected in the establishment of an “Expert Committee for Cardiac Reabilitation”, the highest-ranking body in the World Health Organization (WHO), of which Mathes was appointed co-chair in 1990. WHO Expert Committee: Rehabilitation after Cardiovascular Disease, With Special Emphasis On Developing Countries. WHO Technical report Series, 831, 1991. In 1995, Mathes was appointed Temporary Adviser to WHO; In 2000 the appointment was renewed. In 1994 he became a member of the International Heart Failure Education Council (IHFEC) of the WHO and the International Heart Federation.
Honors

- In 2006 he was awarded the Peter Beckmann Medal in recognition of his services to rehabilitation after a heart attack.
- In 2007 he received honorary membership of the German Society for Prevention and Rehabilitation in Cardiovascular Diseases (DGPR).
