Peter Merck

Johannes Peter Mercedes Merck (born February 3, 1927 in Darmstadt ; † November 10, 2014 there ) was a member of the Merck family as well as co-owner and board member of the pharmaceutical and chemical DAX group of the same name, Merck KGaA .

Family and education

Peter Merck was the son of Ernestine "Ernes" Merck , b. Rogalla von Bieberstein and the Darmstadt industrialist Wilhelm Merck (1893–1952), a member of the family who owned the E. Merck company and a member of the supervisory board of Daimler-Benz AG . Ernes Merck was the only woman to drive professional car races in the 1920s. On November 25, 1927, the year of her greatest success and the birth of her son, she committed suicide in Darmstadt. Her son took part in numerous motorsport events himself in the 1950s, including several times in the Monte Carlo Rally between 1953 and 1956 .

After graduating from high school, Peter Merck completed a bank apprenticeship and attended an interpreting school. During the Second World War he served as an air force helper . In 1951 he joined the family company and worked there in several positions. He was responsible for setting up the foreign companies before becoming a personally liable partner in 1953 and a deputy member of the board in 1967. In 1970 he became a member of the management board and remained so until 1984. At the same time, he was chairman of the shareholders' meeting from 1970 to 2002.

Social Commitment

Peter Merck was socially active in the fields of technology, sport and culture and was involved in many associations and committees. From 1973 to 1994 he was national spokesman for the Technical Relief Organization , from 1984 to 2003 Honorary Consul of the Philippines . In the 1960s he acted as sports president of the Allgemeine Schnauferl Club e. V. and as the organizer of the ASC rally Wiesbaden-Mannheim-Wiesbaden. From 1969 to 1979 he was chairman of the Hessian automobile club . Merck had been active in DEKRA since 1968 , including as a member of the Supervisory Board and President of the Presidential Council. In 2003 he left the latter for reasons of age.

In his hometown, Peter Merck was an active member of the Advisory Board of the Darmstadt Community Foundation and has supported SV Darmstadt 98 since 1967 .

The technology enthusiast Peter Merck drove, among other things, a French Mors vintage car that he donated to the Deutsches Museum .

Honors

Peter Merck was awarded the Cross of Merit 1st Class and the Grand Cross of Merit of the Order of Merit (1993) of the Federal Republic of Germany . In 2003 he was awarded the Hessian Order of Merit and in 2010 he was honored with the THW Gold Medal. Merck was the holder of the bronze plaque of merit of the city of Darmstadt.

Peter Merck was buried in the old cemetery in Darmstadt (grave site: IV wall 18).
