Peter Nawroth

Peter Paul Nawroth (born October 27, 1954 ) is a German physician and university professor at the Heidelberg University Hospital of the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg .

From 1974 Nawroth studied human medicine at the University of Hamburg . In 1980 he completed his studies and was employed by the University of Hamburg with the work stimulation of noradrenaline release from peripheral sympathetic nerves by Ca2 + ions [Ca ions] and the influence of verapamil on Ca2 + -dependent [Ca-dependent] noradrenaline release to the Dr. med. PhD . He then worked as a research assistant at the Tübingen University Hospital in the Department of Internal Medicine, Sub-Department for Gastroenterology . From 1982 to 1987 he worked as a postdoc in the USA, first at Columbia University until 1985 and then at the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation . After returning to Germany, Nawroth worked at the Heidelberg University Hospital in the Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism, Section for Nephrology , where he trained as a specialist in internal medicine. He completed this training in 1991 and was appointed senior physician in Heidelberg in 1992 . In the same year he completed his habilitation and received the Venia legendi for internal medicine . In 1995 and 1996 Nawroth completed further training in angiology as well as in endocrinology and diabetology.

After brief employment in the private sector, including in 1997 as a co-founder of the biology technology company Wilex , Nawroth accepted an offer from the University of Tübingen for a C3 professorship in 1999 and became head of the “Vascular Medicine” section. In 2001 he moved to the University of Heidelberg, where he has held a C4 professorship since then and is director of the Department of Internal Medicine I at the Heidelberg University Hospital. On September 15, 2004, Peter Paul Nawroth was appointed to the Internal Medicine and Dermatology Section under matriculation no. Elected member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina in 6979 . Since 2007 Nawroth has been the deputy senior medical director of the Heidelberg hospital board. 2010, he was from the University of Riga , the honorary doctorate awarded.

Nawroth's research focuses primarily on metabolic diseases and the mechanisms of chronic diseases. These include, above all, long-term diabetic damage, but also mechanisms of the aging process.
