Peter Niesen (born May 2, 1964 in Kalenborn-Schänen ) is professor of political science with a focus on political theory at the University of Hamburg .

Studies and career path

From 1986 to 1992 Niesen studied philosophy , social sciences and German at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main and at St. John's College at Oxford University . In 1998 he was with the work of Kant's theory of freedom of speech in Jürgen Habermas and Maus doctorate . From 1993 to 2004 he was a research assistant at the Faculty of Social Sciences at Frankfurt University at the Chair for Political Theory and History of Ideas of Ingeborg Maus. In 2005 he completed his habilitation in political science. The title of the habilitation thesis was: From the utility principle to democracy. Jeremy Bentham's contribution to the theory of the radical democratic constitutional state .

From 2006 to 2013 he was Professor of Political Science at the Technical University of Darmstadt . Niesen has been Professor of Political Theory at the University of Hamburg since April 2013 .
