Peter Oster (born June 25, 1946 in Frankfurt-Höchst ) is a German geriatrician . Until his retirement he was Medical Director of the Bethanien Hospital in Heidelberg .

Live and act

Peter Oster studied medicine in Heidelberg. The medical activities took him to Berlin , Heidelberg and Bern . He completed his habilitation with pharmacological aspects of experimental hypertension research, lipid metabolism and nutrition. Since 1981 he has been working at the Bethanien Hospital, Geriatric Center of Heidelberg University, where he has been medical director since 1999. Since then, research has focused on strength and coordination training for geriatric patients, especially for cognitively impaired people. Under his leadership, the first "Geriatric Internal Medicine Station for Acute Dementia Patients" (GISAD) was opened in Germany, a model project for the treatment of confused people at risk of running away, which has been taken over several times by other hospitals, in order to prevent sedation with psychotropic drugs as far as possible. In 2011 he received the most prestigious award for geriatric medicine, the Ignatius Nascher Prize, for his life's work.
