Peter S. Harper

Sir Peter Stanley Harper , CBE (born April 28, 1939 in Barnstaple ) is a British geneticist and university professor .

Life

Harper studied biology and medicine at the University of Oxford . He then worked at St Thomas' Hospital in London . This was followed by a research stay at the University of Liverpool with Cyril Clarke from 1967 to 1969 and a stay at Johns Hopkins University with Victor McKusick from 1969 to 1971. After his return to Great Britain in 1971 he went to Cardiff to the Cardiff University School of Medicine, where he established Medical Genetics. Until his retirement in October 2004 he was professor for medical genetics at the university, since then he has been research professor for human genetics.

In 2004 Harper was awarded the title " Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire " (CBE).

Peter Harper and his wife Elaine are parents of five children.

Act

Harper's research interests are in particular the clinical neurogenetics of Huntington's disease and myotonic dystrophies . He published over 300 articles on these topics for specialist journals and several monographs. In Wales he was involved in establishing a comprehensive human genetic counseling .

From 1999 to 2004 Harper was a member of the Human Genetics Commission and from 2004 to 2010 he was a member of the Nuffield Council on Bioethics .

After his retirement, Harper became increasingly concerned with the history of genetics. He founded the Genetics and Medicine Historical Network and published several books on the subject.
