Peter Schmid (born April 24, 1951 in Basel ) is a Swiss politician ( SP ) and church politician. From 1989 to 2003 he was director of education for the canton of Baselland , from 2003 to 2012 he was president of the Basel University of Applied Sciences and the Northwestern Switzerland University of Applied Sciences . From 2002 to 2017 he was a member of the Council of the Federation of Swiss Evangelical Churches .

Schmid was elected to the Basellandschaftliche Landrat in 1975 and was president of the SP parliamentary group from 1983 to 1987. In the district administrator he presided a. a. the business review commission and the petition commission, as well as several special commissions. In 1987 and 1988 he was President of the SP Baselland . After his election to the government council in 1989, he was head of the education and culture department from May 1, 1989 to June 30, 2003 in the government of the canton of Basel-Landschaft. During his entire time as Director of Education in the canton of Baselland, he was a member of the board of the Swiss Conference of Directors of Education. (EDK). He was also a member of the first university council of the University of Basel.

From 1995 to 2002 he was President of the Organizing Committee of the Federal Gymnastics Festival in Baselland. In 2002 the Swiss Gymnastics Federation (STV) awarded him honorary membership.

He was responsible for establishing the bi-cantonal sponsorship of the University of (both) Basel. The development of the technical colleges and the expansion of vocational training. A new law on sports funding laid the foundation for sports funding in Baselland. A cultural contract with Basel-Stadt reorganized the support for regional cultural institutions. The school laws have been replaced by a comprehensive education law as a new basis for the education system in the canton of Basellandschaft. Complete revision of the Scholarship Act. The Association for a Strong Region of Northwestern Switzerland recognized the cross-border policy in 2003 with the sponsorship award.

After finishing his government activities, Peter Schmid became President of the University Council of the University of Applied Sciences in Basel. The governments of the cantons of Aargau, Baselstadt, Baselland and Solothurn appointed him President of Project Management for the foundation of the University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland (FHNW). From 2006 to 2012 he was the first President of the FHNW University Council. His most important concerns were the establishment of stable structures, the systematic further development of research, the regulation of working conditions based on social partnership and the establishment of a culture of participation for employees and students.

Since 2018 he has been a member of the board of trustees of the SP-related educational foundation "Anny-Klawa-Morf". The main purpose of the foundation is to carry out political education, basic and dialogue work in order to separate it operationally as operationally as possible from the party. The foundation council consists mainly of social democrats who no longer hold a political mandate.

As a qualified social worker and catechist, Schmid has always had close ties to the Reformed Church . Theological studies in Berlin and Basel followed. Before he became a professional politician, he worked in the Muttenz parish and from 2003 to 2017 he was a member of the council of the Swiss Evangelical Church Federation . The theological faculty of the University of Basel awarded him an honorary doctorate in 2003 . Peter Schmid has been Vice President of the Council since 2011. He represented the SEK in many ways at the Evangelical Church in Germany. In 2014 (until the end of 2017) he took over the presidency of the newly designed Institute for Theology and Ethics of the SEK. From 2013 to 2017 he was a member of the scientific advisory board for the Reformation anniversary in 2017 in Germany. From 2014 to 2015 he headed the visitation commission of the Reformed Church of Baselland.

Further mandates

Since 2004 Peter Schmid has been President of the "Friends of Basel Zoo " association. Promoting the educational work of the "Zolli" is particularly important to him. He also deals with the ethics of the animal-human relationship. The association consistently supports Basel Zoo in the four fields of scientifically managed zoos: education, animal and species protection, research and recreation.

Peter Schmid has been a member of the board of directors of ipso! Bildung - formerly Basler Bildungsgruppe - and Cornelsen Schulverlage Schweiz AG since 2003. From 2004 to 2019 he was Chairman of the Frey-Grynäum Board of Trustees in Basel (Switzerland); since 2011 president of the sponsorship "Gare du Nord" - the railway station for new music in Basel. From 2003 to 2016 Peter Schmid was a member of the board of Baselland Tourismus. In 2016 he was awarded honorary membership.

Private

Peter Schmid grew up in Binningen and lives in Muttenz BL and Latsch GR . He is married and has a daughter and a son and a grandfather of two granddaughters and one grandson. He was an enthusiastic boy scout in the scout department of the Rheinbund in Basel. At the Rheinbund he was a. a. Head of department, chairman of the department council and president of the Rheinbundhaus Hochwald Foundation. In 1998 he was awarded honorary membership.
