Peter Schwenkmezger

Peter Schwenkmezger (born August 17, 1946 in Laichingen ; † July 12, 2018 in Trier ) was a German psychologist . From 2000 to 2011 he was President of the University of Trier .

Life

After graduating from high school in Geislingen an der Steige , he began studying psychology at the University of Tübingen in 1967 . In 1972 he passed the diploma examination, in 1976 he received his doctorate with a thesis on risk behavior and risk tolerance. He then worked at the universities of Tübingen , Bochum and Wuppertal . In 1982 he completed his habilitation , and in 1984 he received a professorship at the University of Trier. From 1989 to 1991 he was Dean of Faculty I and from 1995 to 1998 Vice President for Research, Teaching, Further Education and International Relations. In April 2000, he succeeded Rainer Hettich as President of Trier University. He was confirmed in this office in December 2005 for a further six years. His term of office ended on September 1, 2011. From 2002 to 2004 he was chairman of the state rectors' conference .

His main research interests were clinical diagnostics, health psychology, emotional psychology and sports psychology. His research on fear and anxiety in sport received a lot of attention. He was co-editor of the journals Zeitschrift für Gesundheitspsychologie , Diagnostica and International Review of Health Psychology and a member of the extended board of the European Health Psychology Society . Schwenkmezger was a founding member of the German Association for Sport Science, was instrumental in founding the journal "sportpsychologie" (later renamed "psychologie und sport") of the working group for sport psychology in Germany, which appeared in 1987 for the first time, and was editor of the paper. In September 2005 he received the Leibniz Medal of the Academy of Sciences and Literature Mainz .
