Peter Sichel

Peter Max Ferdinand Sichel , (born September 12, 1922 in Mainz ) is a German-American wine merchant and US secret agent. He became known through the Blue Nun wine brand , which made Liebfraumilch a well-known type of wine in the USA, and as head of the CIA branch in West Berlin in the 1950s.

Life

Peter Sichel was born into a family of Jewish wine merchants, H. Sichel Sons, in Mainz. The parental company had offices in London and Bordeaux (where it is still active today). Peter Sichel attended the Stowe School in England and began training in the family business in Bordeaux. There he was interned as a so-called “enemy alien” during the Second World War . Via Spain and Portugal he managed to escape to the USA, where he worked for the US secret service. He was awarded the Distinguished Intelligence Medal for his services .

Until 1960 he worked for the CIA a. a. active in Berlin, Washington and Hong Kong. He then took over the management of his family's wine import company in New York. In this role, he made the Blue Nun brand a widely known and successful wine in the USA - not least through a sophisticated advertising campaign. The blend of Blue Nun called Liebfraumilch consisted of German wines from Müller-Thurgau , Silvaner and Gewürztraminer .
