Peter Taptuna (* 1955 or 1956 in Cambridge Bay , Victoria Island ) is a Canadian politician . The Inuk was Prime Minister of Nunavut Territory from November 19, 2013 to November 21, 2017 .

Life

Taptuna attended a residential school in Inuvik . He later worked for an oil production company in the Beaufort Sea for 13 years , then in a gold mine near Kugluktuk . He eventually completed a management course at Nunavut Arctic College in Arviat . From 2000 he was director and chairman of the economic development company Kitikmeot Corporation .

His political career began in 1999 as a councilor and deputy mayor of Kugluktuk. On October 27, 2008 he was elected to the territorial parliament of Nunavut. As a result, he held several ministerial posts (vice premier, mining, economic development, transport). After he was re-elected as a Member of Parliament for Kugluktuk, he was elected Prime Minister on November 15, 2013. After he did not apply for re-election in 2017, Paul Quassa succeeded him in this office.
