David Meyler (born May 29, 1989 in Cork ) is an Irish football player .

Club career

Cork City

Meyler passed through various Cork City youth teams and signed his first professional contract in 2008. He made ten appearances for Cork in the League of Ireland .

Sunderland

On July 25, 2008, he moved to Sunderland AFC for an undisclosed fee . He played his first competitive game on December 28, 2009 against Blackburn Rovers . On May 2, 2010, he suffered a severe cruciate ligament rupture in the game against Manchester United and it was feared that he would have to take about 12 months off. However, he recovered faster than expected. After initially playing in the second team, he made his comeback on the professional team in the game against Fulham when he was substituted on in the 52nd minute. On January 5, 2011, he tore an inner ligament in the away game against Aston Villa and had to take another 10 weeks off. He returned to Sunderland Bank on April 16, 2011 in the game against Birmingham City .

Hull City

On November 8, 2012, Meyler was reunited with his former manager Steve Bruce by moving to Hull City on loan . He made his debut in the away game against Cardiff City . He scored his first goal on December 8, 2012 against Watford FC . On January 8, 2013, Meyler was firmly signed and he signed a three and a half year contract. After advancing to the 2013/14 season, he scored his first Premier League goal in a 3-1 win against Liverpool on December 1, 2013 .

National team

He made his international debut for Ireland's U-21s in February 2009, against Germany. He made his first team debut on September 11, 2012, against the Oman national team at Craven Cottage .

At the European Football Championship in France in 2016 , he was included in Ireland's squad. He was one of two field players in the squad who were not used in the tournament.
