Peter Theodoricus

Peter Theodoricus also: Dietrich, Thiederich (born August 9, 1580 in Crossen an der Elster , † May 9, 1640 in Jena ) was a German legal scholar.

Life

origin

Peter Theodoricus was the son of pastor Stephan Thiederich (Latinized: Theodoricus) (died December 26, 1534 in Stahmeln ; † January 9, 1606 in Zempschen) and his wife Margaretha König, who came from Eisleben. His father was a teacher in Mansfeld and Eisleben, and from 1665 vice rector there. His mother Margaretha came from a pastor's family.

Studies and academic career as a lawyer

After attending the Stiftschule in Zeitz , he moved to the University of Jena in the summer semester of 1598 to study law. After changing studies to the University of Leipzig , he returned to Jena, where he received his doctorate in law under Johann Suevus in June 1606 . In March 1608 he received a professorship in law at the Jena Salana. In March 1616 he became assessor at the court court and Schöppenstuhl, then princely councilor and in 1635 full professor at the law faculty.

Importance as a lawyer

In his time, Theodoricus had earned an excellent reputation as a criminal law scholar. Building on the legal doctrine of Petrus Ramus , he sought to shape a more modern conception of criminal prosecution on the basis of Roman law at the time. Thus, among other things, he laid the legal foundations on which Benedikt Carpzov the Younger established an independent German legal system. Theodoricus also took part in the organizational tasks of the Salana. He was dean of the Faculty of Law on several occasions and in the winter semester of 1611 and in the summer semesters of 1620, 1632 and 1638 rector of the alma mater . In 1622 the influential lawyer had acquired the Edelhof von Großlöbichau as hereditary lord.

After his death, an epitaph was set up in the Jena Collegiate Church , but it was destroyed in a bomb attack in February 1945.
