Peter Tiara (also: Petrejus Tiara, Pieter Tjeerts ; * July 15, 1514 in Workum , † February 8, 1586 in Franeker ) was a Dutch philologist and doctor.

Life

Descending from an important Frisian family, Tiara had completed his training in his hometown and in Haarlem , where he showed a high level of comprehension. After studying medical science at the University of Leuven , he traveled through Germany, France and Italy. In the latter country he obtained a doctorate in medicine. He then became a doctor in Franeker and worked as a teacher of the Greek language in Leuven, where Suffridus Petri (1527–1597) was one of his students in 1553 . In 1555 he moved to Delft as a city doctor and married a woman from Friesland around that time. Around 1559/60 went to the University of Douai as a professor of the Greek and Latin languages .

But since his wife did not understand the French language, he moved to Franeker at her insistence in 1565, where he again worked as a city doctor and was elected mayor several times. When the University of Leiden was founded, he was appointed professor of the Greek language there on July 17, 1575. He was rector of the university in the founding year 1575 and from 1577 to 1579 . With the establishment of the University of Franeker , he moved there in March 1585. He died the following year. Primarily he appeared as a translator of Greek writers into the Latin language.

Tiara was married twice. His first wife was Pietrick Anskes, a timber merchant's daughter († before 1554). His second wife was Aef Barents († September 23, 1597), who after his death was Dr. Jacob Meintes married. He had three children.
