Peter Townsend (social scientist)
Peter Brereton Townsend (born April 6, 1928 in Middlesbrough , † June 7, 2009 ) was a British social scientist , who was known for his work on researching poverty in Great Britain .
Life
Townsend worked from 1952 to 1957 as a research assistant and employee at the Institute of Community Studies. He then took up a position as a lecturer at the London School of Economics until 1963 . In 1963 he received a call from the newly established University of Essex as Professor of Sociology . From 1975 to 1978 he was Pro-Vice Chancelor of the university. In 1982 he began teaching as professor and professor emeritus at the University of Bristol , where the Townsend Center of International Poverty Research named after him was established. Since 1998 he has also taught as professor for international social policy at the London School of Economics. In 2004 he was elected a member of the British Academy .
Townsend co-founded the Child Poverty Action Group in 1965 and chaired it from 1969. He was also chairman of the Disability Alliance from 1974. Since the 1950s he has been an adviser to the Labor Party. Townsend was married with five children.
