Peter Tschopp

Peter Tschopp (born April 26, 1940 in Basel ; † July 4, 2009 in Geneva ) was a Swiss economist and politician ( FDP ).

Life

Peter Tschopp studied economics in Basel and Geneva. After receiving his PhD in economics , he worked at Yale University . In 1971 he was offered a professorship for economic policy and economics at the University of Geneva . He was the deputy rector and long-time dean of the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences. From 1998 to 2004 he was director of the Geneva University Institute for International Studies . In 2004 he retired .

From 1991 to 1999 Peter Tschopp was a member of the Swiss National Council for two legislative terms for the FDP of the canton of Geneva . From 1996 to 1999 he was also Vice President of the FDP Switzerland. He was particularly committed to Switzerland's accession to the EU .

Since 1990 he has been president of the Swiss foundation “Vivamos Mejor”, which maintains over twenty development projects in Central and South America. Since 2004 he has been President of the Ethics Council of the Swiss Statistics Society.

He died of a wasp sting . He was married and had two children. He was the uncle of today's Geneva FDP National Councilor Christian Lüscher .
