Peter Vennemeyer (born November 10, 1959 ) is a German local politician ( SPD ) and has been mayor of Greven since 2007 . After he has decided not to run again, his term of office will end after the local elections in autumn 2020 .

Life

Education and professional career

Vennemeyer completed his training with the city of Münster . He worked there for four years, then moved to Telgte for eight years . He then worked as an administrative officer in the Federal Ministry of the Interior . From 1990 to 1998 he was a lecturer in administrative training at the Hamburg vocational support organization. Vennemeyer has lived in Greven with his family since 1994. From 1998 until his election as mayor in 2007 he was employed as an IT project manager for a software and systems house .

Vennemeyer is a Protestant Christian and, in addition to his political functions, is also active in the presbytery of his parish.

On March 25, 2007 he was elected Mayor Grevens and prevailed in a runoff election with 59.2 percent against the candidate of the CDU , Jörg Hussmann. In the local elections on May 25, 2014 , Vennemeyer was confirmed in office with 51.0 percent in the first ballot. As a full-time mayor , he is the city's representative, chairman of the council and head of administration. He is now in charge of an administration with almost 300 employees. In June 2019 Vennemeyer announced that he would not run again for the office of mayor in the next local elections in 2020 . His term of office as Mayor of Greven ends in autumn 2020 after 13 years.

Peter Vennemeyer has been a member of the SPD since he was 35 . From 1999 to 2003 he was chairman of the Greven local association , from 2000 to 2004 parliamentary group manager and an informed citizen in the school committee and in the committee for urban development and the environment. In 2004 he was elected to the council and was parliamentary group leader of the SPD. He gave up the chair when he took over the office of mayor.
