Peter Wernicke

Peter Wernicke (born September 8, 1958 in Sandersleben ; † September 8, 2017 in Carpin ) was a German ornithologist , animal photographer and conservationist. He was director of the Feldberger Seenlandschaft nature park .

Life

Peter Wernicke studied biology at the Humboldt University in Berlin from 1979 to 1984 . He then worked at the Biological Station in Serrahn , where he dealt with ornithological topics. In 1989 he was with a dissertation on the influence of weather on the autumn train Nordic geese doctorate . Forest ecology became a further field of work.

During the reunification in the GDR he worked on the preparation of the Serrahn sub-area of ​​the Müritz National Park . From November 1, 1990, he headed the construction team of the Feldberger Seenlandschaft nature park. After its establishment in 1997, he took over the management of the nature park.

Both professionally and voluntarily, he campaigned for the protection of the beech forests in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . Another concern for him was the protection of the birds of prey, in particular the preservation of the breeding grounds of the lesser spotted eagle .

Peter Wernicke has been involved in animal photography since 1980. In 1986 he was one of the co-founders of the Mecklenburg Animal Photographers Working Group. In 1990 he became a member of the Society of German Animal Photographers. Several of his pictures have been awarded national and international prizes. In 1996 he was named nature photographer of the year.

In 2013, Peter Wernicke and Hans-Jürgen Spieß were awarded the Annalize Wagner Prize for their book Serrahn - World Natural Heritage in the Müritz National Park .

Peter Wernicke died on September 8, 2017 in a boat accident.
