Peter Wright (choreographer)

Peter Wright (born November 25, 1926 in London ) is an English ballet dancer and choreographer . His productions of the Nutcracker and Giselle for the Royal Ballet are among the troupe's most popular works .

Wright made his debut as a World War II dancer with the Ballets Jooss . He created his first ballet choreography in 1957 for the Sadlers Wells Ballet . In 1961 he worked as a teacher and ballet master in John Cranko's Stuttgart Ballet . Wright's productions of the classics are still in the repertoire of dance companies around the world.

In 1969 he became assistant, later associate director of the Birmingham Royal Ballet and from 1977 he became director of Sadlers Wells Ballet. In 1995 - when he left the company - Princess Margaret awarded him the title of Director Laureate.

In 1990 Wright received an honorary doctorate from the University of London and in 1991 was made a Fellow of the Birmingham Conservatoire of Music. He is President of the Benesh Institute, a Vice President of the Royal Academy of Dance and Patron of the London Ballet.
