Peter Zumkley (born September 17, 1936 in Berlin ) is a German officer and politician ( SPD ).

From 1991 to 1993 he was senator and authorized representative of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg at the federal government.

Life and work

After graduating from high school in 1956, Zumkley joined the German Armed Forces and worked there as a professional soldier a. a. at the Panzer Grenadier Brigade 17 . He was deployed in various areas, including staff and commander assignments and as a lecturer at the command and control academy of the Bundeswehr . In 1987 he ended his military career and retired from the Bundeswehr with the rank of colonel .

He became a member of the Public Services, Transport and Traffic Union , the Bundeswehr Social Welfare Office , the Federal Armed Forces Association , the Landesverband Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge (board member), the Association of Reservists of the German Armed Forces (Deputy President) and the Board of Trustees of the Sankt Barbara Germany Foundation .

Peter Zumkley is married and has two children.

Political party

Zumkley has been a member of the SPD since 1969. From 1983 to 1988 he was chairman of the SPD district and from 1987 to 1994 chairman of the SPD district of Wandsbek . In 1972 he became head of the peace and security working group of the SPD Hamburg .

MP

Zumkley was a member of the German Bundestag from 1987 until the resignation of his mandate on July 3, 1991 and again from 1994 to 2002, where he was chairman of the working group on security issues of the SPD parliamentary group from 1998 to 2002 . He was also a member of the North Atlantic Assembly . He was a full member of the Defense Committee and the Petitions Committee .

Peter Zumkley has always entered the Bundestag as a directly elected member of the Hamburg-Wandsbek constituency .

In 1993/94 he was a member of the Hamburg Parliament .

Public offices

Zumkley was a deputy of the Hamburg interior authorities from 1970 to 1986. From June 26, 1991 to December 15, 1993 he served as Senator and federal agent in the Senate of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg led by First Mayor Henning Voscherau . At the same time he took over the Senate Office for the administrative service and the Senate Office for District Affairs. He was also the European Commissioner for the Senate.
