Peter van Uhm

Peter van Uhm (born June 15, 1955 in Nijmegen ) is a Dutch general . He was the Supreme Commander of the Dutch Armed Forces from 2008 to 2012 .

Life

After completing his school education, he went to the Koninklijke Militaire Academie ( Royal Military Academy ) in Breda in 1972 . In 1982 he became company commander in the 43rd Tank Battalion and in 1983 went to Lebanon with this unit . 1984 to 1986 he attended the Hogere Krijgsschool ( Higher Military School ). In 2000 he went to Sarajevo as a brigadier general within the framework of SFOR . On September 5, 2005, van Uhm , who had meanwhile been appointed lieutenant general , became supreme commander of the Dutch army .

On April 17, 2008, Peter van Uhm was appointed supreme commander of the Dutch armed forces as the successor to Dick Berlijn . His son Dennis van Uhm, who was stationed as a first lieutenant in Afghanistan, was killed in a bomb attack a few hours after his father was appointed.
