In the 1960s he took part in the national German championships several times . He caused a sensation at the 1962 DM when he dethroned the previous series winner Conny Freundorfer , who had previously won the title nine times in a row. After that, Freundorfer did not win any more DM title, the Eberhard Schöler era began . At this DM 1962, von Klaudy showed himself in impressive form. He prevailed against such strong players as Hans Wilhelm Gäb , Herbert Marx and Peter Held and then defeated Conny Freundorfer 3-2 in the quarter-finals. His backhand hit balls in particular had an impact. In the semifinals he was finally defeated by Dieter Michalek , which was enough for third place. In the double competition, von Klaudy and Heinz Harst lost to the later finalists Eberhard Schöler / Dieter Forster .

A year later, at the 1963 DM , Freundorfer returned the favor and defeated von Klaudy 3-2.

In 1963 Peter married von Klaudy.
