Petermann Bjerg ( German also Petermannspitze ) is a 2970 meter high mountain in Frænkel-Land in the Northeast Greenland National Park .
geography
The mountain that dominates its surroundings lies north of the Nordenskiöld glacier and south of the Nunataks Kalifbjerg (2667 m), Kerberus (approx. 2500 m), Gog (approx. 2600 m) and Magog (approx. 2400 m). The Gregory glacier flows from its north-northeast flank into Knækdalen.
history
The Petermann Bjerg was first sighted by Europeans during the Second German North Pole Expedition on August 12, 1870. Julius Payer and Ralph Copeland saw him from a peak about 2100 m high near the Payerspitze ( Payer Tinde ), which is almost 80 km to the east . It was named in honor of the German geographer and cartographer August Petermann , who initiated the expedition led by Carl Koldewey .
The first ascent was made by James Wordie and two companions on August 15, 1929.
