Peters, who was an aspiring prize boxer , went blind in one eye after a traffic accident. He then performed as a singer and pianist in pubs in and around London in the 1960s . Lee was a dancer during this time and performed with her cousin as "Hailey Twins".
After Peters and Lee had met, the two musicians began to make music together in 1970. It was followed by appearances in clubs and resorts as well as the participation in the TV - talent show Opportunity Knocks , a precursor of Star Search . The duo's music was pop music with elements of cabaret and R&B .
In 1973 a record deal was signed with Philips . Peters & Lee were the first musicians after The Beatles who managed to occupy the top position of the English charts with their debut single and debut album : Welcome Home was in first place for a week in July 1973, the corresponding album We Can Make It stayed there in the August of the year two weeks.
The second album, By Your Side , entered the charts at the end of 1973 and reached number 9, while the single of the same name did not rise above number 39. The sound was a mix of folk and pop music. Another top 10 album followed in autumn 1974 with Rainbow at number 6 on the English charts. The releases Don't Stay Away Too Long (3rd place) and Rainbow (17th place) were further successes. The album Favorites climbed to number 2 in late 1975.
The albums Invitation and Serenade could not build on previous successes in 1976. The duo then separated in 1980. Six years later, they reunited. From then on, Peters & Lee performed together again to make a living. Peters died in 1992 of complications from cancer . Dianne Lee has since devoted herself to acting .
