The Petit Gascon saintongeois is an FCI recognized dog breed from France ( FCI Group 6, Section 1.2, Standard No. 21 (b) ).

Origin and history

The Petit Gascon Saintongeois was bred as a variant of the Grand Gascon Saintongeois at the beginning of the twentieth century , whereby the shoulder height was reduced by 10 cm. The aim of the breeding was to use it on rabbits and hares; However, it was also used for hunting larger game. The breed has now become very rare: in France there is only one pack left. A few hunters still have one or two dogs of this breed.

description

At up to 62 cm, the "Petit" is slightly smaller than the older, large form of the French hound . Its fur is short, dense and close-fitting, with a white base color, mostly black spotted but also spotted. The cheeks are tan and there are two tan markings above the eyes. The ears are set below the eye line, fall folded and should, when placed forward, reach at least to the tip of the nose. The tail is carried in the shape of a saber.
